Elevate Your Home: Creative Uses and Stylish Displays for Your Herbs
If you picked up one of our “Create Your Own Herb Garden” kits at the RGA Expo — welcome! This post is packed with ideas to help you make the most of your new herbs. And if you’re joining us from our website, you’re in for just as much inspiration.
Imagine stepping into your home and being greeted by the fresh, vibrant scent of basil, rosemary, or mint. What if that same source of natural beauty also provided the star ingredients for your next culinary masterpiece? Integrating an herb garden into your home isn't just about growing food; it's about cultivating a living focal point that delights the senses, purifies the air, and inspires delicious creations.
Gone are the days when herb gardens were relegated to forgotten corners. Today, they're stepping into the limelight as stunning, functional decor elements.
Here’s how to turn your herb patch into a stunning focal point:
Vertical Wonders: Limited on horizontal space? Go vertical! A multi-tiered plant stand or even repurposed pallet shelves can create a living wall of herbs. This draws the eye upwards, adding height and an architectural element to your room.
Chic Containers: Ditch the drab plastic pots. Opt for stylish containers that complement your home's decor. Ceramic pots in varying sizes and complementary colors, sleek metal planters, or even charming terracotta pots can elevate the look. For a cohesive feel, choose pots that share a similar material or color palette.
Strategic Placement is Key: Think about where your herbs will thrive and where they'll make the biggest impact. A sunny kitchen windowsill is classic, but consider a console table in a living room, a prominent spot on your dining room buffet, or even a well-lit corner in your entryway.
Accessorize with Purpose: Add small, decorative elements like cute plant markers, miniature gardening tools, or even fairy lights for an evening glow. A small, attractive watering can nearby can be both functional and decorative.
Fragrance as an Element: Beyond their visual appeal, herbs offer an incredible aromatic experience. Place fragrant herbs like lavender, mint, or lemon balm where they can release their scent with a gentle brush, adding another layer to your home's ambiance.

Harvesting Happiness: Ideas & Delicious Recipes from Your Indoor Oasis
Now that your herb garden is a visual masterpiece, it's time to enjoy the bounty! Fresh herbs provide unparalleled flavor and aroma to your cooking. Here are a few simple recipes to get you started:
Herbal Sachets
Want to make your drawers, closets, or your car smell amazing? Here's how to create simple herbal sachets!
What You'll Need
Small fabric bags or squares (like muslin or cotton, about 4-6 inches)
Dried herbs you love the smell of
A few drops of essential oil (optional, for extra scent)
Twine or ribbon to tie them closed
Let's Make Them!
Pick your herbs: Choose one herb or mix a few together in a bowl. If using essential oils, add a few drops and stir.
Fill the bag: Spoon a little of your herb mix into the center of your fabric square or inside a small bag. Don't stuff it too full!
Tie it up: Gather the fabric corners or pull the bag's drawstring tight. Tie it securely with twine or ribbon.
Enjoy! Place your sachets wherever you want a natural, fresh scent.
Quick Tips
Refresh the scent: Squeeze the sachet or add a few more drops of essential oil when the smell fades.
Use fresh herbs: Recently dried herbs smell the best!
Keep away from furry friends: Place in an area your pets can't reach.
Herbal Ice Cubes
These are great for cooking later – just pop one into a hot pan!
What You'll Need
Fresh Herbs: Choose your favorites.
Olive Oil: Extra virgin olive oil works perfectly.
Ice Cube Tray: A silicone tray makes it easiest to pop them out.
Knife and Cutting Board
Easy Steps
Wash and Dry Herbs: Gently rinse your fresh herbs and pat them very dry. Excess water can cause freezer burn.
Chop Herbs: Finely chop your herbs. The size depends on how you plan to use them.
Fill Ice Cube Tray: Put about 1-2 tablespoons of chopped herbs into each section of your ice cube tray. You can mix different herbs in one cube or keep them separate.
Add Olive Oil: Pour olive oil over the herbs in each section until they are mostly covered.
Freeze: Place the ice cube tray flat in your freezer. Freeze overnight or until solid.
Store: Once frozen, pop the cubes out of the tray. Store them in an airtight freezer bag or container. Label the bag with the type of herb and date.
How to Use Them
Drop a cube into a hot pan when sautéing vegetables, meats, or making scrambled eggs.
Add to soups, stews, or pasta sauces.
Melt a cube and drizzle over warm bread or roasted vegetables.
Lavender Lemonade
Enjoy this lemonade on a hot day!
Yields: About 4-6 servings Prep time: 10 minutes Chill time: 30 minutes (or more)
What You'll Need:
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup hot water (just boiled)
1 tablespoon culinary dried lavender (make sure it's for food use! English lavender is perfect)
1 cup fresh lemon juice (from about 4-6 lemons)
3 cups cold water
Ice and lemon slices for serving (optional)
Easy Steps:
Make Lavender Simple Syrup: In a heatproof pitcher or a medium bowl, combine the sugar and hot water. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely. Add the dried lavender and stir well. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes to let the lavender flavor steep into the syrup.
Strain Lavender: Place a fine-mesh strainer over another pitcher or bowl. Pour the lavender simple syrup through the strainer to remove all the lavender buds. Press down on the buds to get all the liquid out. Discard the lavender.
Mix Lemonade: Add the fresh lemon juice and the 3 cups of cold water to the lavender-infused syrup. Stir everything together very well.
Chill & Serve: Taste and adjust sweetness if you like (add a little more sugar if needed, or more water if it's too strong). Chill the lemonade in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving. Serve over ice with a lemon slice if desired.
